Probate fees rise criticised

Lawyers claim probate fee rises are a stealth taxMinisters’ plans to increase probate fees from £215 to as much as £2,000 have been attacked as a stealth tax on the bereaved, figures obtained under the freedom of information act showed that the Probate Service was cutting staff numbers and costs, and that the higher fees were intended to raise funds for the Treasury. The legal profession has described these fee increases as a stealth tax. Add that to the record high levels of inheritance tax and it suggests a very worrying trend.
