WHAT IS A NOTARY PUBLIC ?
A notary public (or public notary) is a municipal officer set up by the courts to serve the public in non-contentious matters. This could include matters to do with estates, deeds, powers-of-attorney, and foreign and international business.
A notary’s main functions are to administer and witness legal documents such as oaths and statutory declarations and to take affidavits and authenticate the execution of certain classes of documents.
They may also take acknowledgments of deeds and other conveyances, and to certify duplicates of documents as true copies of the Originals and to verify signatures.
From time to time clients may require the services of a Notary Public. This is particularly relevant if they have purchased properties abroad. Foreign and Commonwealth countries will not accept documentation being witnessed by a local solicitor. They require the documents to be witnessed in the presence of a Notary Public.
Kevin Neary was appointed a Notary Public by the then Lord Chief Justice for Northern Ireland, the Right Honourable Sir Brian Kerr.
He is qualified to notarise all foreign documentation as is required of a Notary Public in Northern Ireland, and is also registered with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Notaries of London to be able to obtain, if required, Apostilles ( a verification document sometimes required which conforms the Notary is who he says he is) .there are relatively few Notaries Public in Northern Ireland.
IDENTIFICATION
If you require Notary services you will need to produce certain evidence of your identity. These documents will be the same as those you would produce if you were opening a bank account etc., and we are required to keep copies of these and your notarised documents for Money Laundering purposes. Even if you are personally known to Mr. Neary you will need to produce verification of your identity – a passport or driving licence, with a photograph – and address confirmation in the form of a recent – no older than six months – utility bill, voting card or Smart Pass.
